How it's calculated
Weekly and biweekly paydays repeat every 7 or 14 days from the payday you enter, forward and backward through the year. Semi-monthly paydays fall on the 15th and the last day of each month. Monthly paydays fall on the day you pick, or the last day for shorter months.
Weekly known payday ± 7 days × n
Biweekly known payday ± 14 days × n
Semi 15th and last day of month
Monthly day N (or last day)
Weekend option (semi, monthly):
Saturday → Friday, Sunday → Friday
A year has 52 weeks and a day or two, so weekly pay gives 52 or 53 paydays and biweekly gives 26 or 27. The extras land in months with five weekly or three biweekly paydays.
Questions
Why do some months have three paychecks?
Biweekly pay comes 26 times a year, which is two a month plus two extra. Those two extra checks land in whichever months have three paydays. Many people budget on two checks a month and treat the third as savings or a bill catch-up.
Can a year have 27 biweekly paydays?
Yes, about once every 11 years, when the first payday falls on January 1 or 2. Salaried workers sometimes see smaller checks that year, because the annual salary is split 27 ways.
What if payday falls on a holiday?
Most employers pay the business day before. This calendar does not know your employer's holidays, so check the payroll calendar for those weeks.
